Lot Title:

1807 "Comet" Variety (S-271, R-1). XF.
|
Description:
|
Popularity of the S-271 "comet" overwhelms supply, probably due to its separate entry in the Redbook, and when better detailed pieces come along, competition tends to be strong. Intricate details provide good reason to recommend the present example, as the comet feature itself is prominently defined, and the design elements beautifully brought up overall. Individual strands of hair are sharply struck, as is the entire reverse, leading to a details grade of AU-50. Regrettably, surface issues must be taken into account when considering an overall grade, as the obverse fields have been smoothed (carelessly on the right side), two scratches penetrate the "7" in the date, and a handful of tiny digs are strewn across Liberty's portrait. Likely recolored, but the overall sienna-walnut patina is fairly pleasing. EAC 15 is your cataloger's net assessment.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

This coin looks a little better than the grade listed. The surfaces are nice and smooth, and it appears to be free of all but the most trivial of marks. The detail is all there, and the color is... |
