Lot Title:
'1788' Machin's Mills Halfpenny PCGS VF-35.
Description:
Machins Mills (which sans-apostrophe is the correct spelling, though seldom is it spelled properly even in research text) coppers have distinction of being one of the very few counterfeit coins (or imitations, at any rate) that PCGS will knowingly certify. Imitation halfpence so minted often evade recognition by casual collectors today, but can be readily identified by the disproportionately large lips on George III, and triangular denticles edging the coin, most prominently on the reverse. Machins Mills produced the coins in light weight to pass off as genuine halfpennies, thus profiting from the difference in metal content. The present example dated 1788 is exceptionally attractive, featuring dark walnut-brown surfaces that still retain original luster.
