Lot Title:

1814 (S-295, R-1) VF.
|
Description:
|
Later die states of S-295 are fancifully called "bearded" coins, but the die break beneath the chin of this example has not progressed to that point. A thin crack arching through lower right quadrant is diagnostic, however. The "damage" referenced for this otherwise extremely attractive 1814 cent amounts to a series of three neat, squarish digs above the date, and each is as small as the period at the end of this sentence. Thus, they sincerely have very little negative impact on the eye appeal. Of more importance is the fantastic quality of the planchet -- much, much better than average for a Classic head. The creamy surfaces are amazingly free of circulation marks or scratches, and much cartwheel luster remains, particularly on the reverse. Given XF-45 details, an EAC 25 grade at minimum should adequately reflect the net effects of damage, and this coin surely looks nicer than that. From the Forest Park Collection.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
