Lot Title:
1852-C XF.
Description:
Repunched "1" in the date clearly shows remnants of the original punching too low in the field, and the bottom of the "8" is also recut. The 9,434 mintage of 1852-C is often touted as evidence that it is a rare coin, but there is some suspicion that a hoard of these once existed, as the survival rate seems rather high by comparison to other branch mint gold of the era. Your cataloger has seen statements of "only about a hundred extant", but population reports show that well over 200 have been certified! At hand is an uncertified example that displays considerable mint luster and excellent, original surface quality, as well as a decent strike that has even mostly brought up the "LAR" that is usually faint on the reverse. Careful observers will note three shallow digs widely separated on the obverse, but their visual impact is mitigated somewhat by the diminutive size of the coin, and the grade is appropriately adjusted to reflect this.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
