Lot Title:

1879-CC ANACS F-12 details/heat damaged/tooled/altered surfaces.
Description:
The ANACS description could not more aptly describe the condition of this Carson City product. Hardly recognizable as an genuine coin at first glance, prudent examination of the date and mintmark positioning is required to lead to successful attribution as an authentic yet t severely altered double-eagle. Extreme granularity seems to have been caused by heating the coin, possibly with a blow torch, and then the whole coin was polished, followed by a subsequent attempt to smooth the left obverse side. Bizarre! But genuine. Genuinely bizarre?
