Lot Title:

1787 Fugio Copper. Newman 17-S.1, Rarity-5, 137.4 grains. XF.
|
Description:
|
Coloration plays a key role in the evaluation of the eye appeal of any Fugio copper, as strike quality, and by all means planchet quality, varied widely at the time of manufacture, and neither characteristic can be used to judge the subsequent level of care given a particular specimen. Delightful brassy-bronze tone suggests that this example was removed from circulation and preserved fairly early on, and a level of detail which meets common sense standards for at least the "extremely-fine" level can be found on both sides. Despite significant clanging of the dies, Roman numerals are sharply defined on the sundial except for "XII", which is entirely absent, and "I", which is just hinted at. (Your humble cataloger shall now take this opportunity to note some that many collectors haven't noticed: the 4:00 position is represented as a Roman IIII, not IV, as it would be today.) Micro-granularity impacts the overall smoothness somewhat, and this coin was clearly struck on a planchet of questionable standard, as the left side of the sundial suffers a grotesque lamination of epic proportion, while vertical planchet fissures appear at the lower left reverse. The consignor's documentation indicates this piece lies just outside the lower condition census.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
