Lot Title:

1785 Connecticut Copper. Miller 3.4-F.1, Rarity-3, 135.0 grains. VF.
|
Description:
|
(Ex. Norweb 3/1988: 2461, C4 2006: 71) Envelopes from both prior sales are included with this, the Norweb example of Miller 3.4-F.1, and as befits the pedigree, an unusually choice coin for the type and variety. The Notre Dame website states that "Connecticut coppers have the most complex minting history of all colonial issues". Die marriages were comprised of at least 355 known combinations, and inconsistent planchet quality led to coins that varied widely in appearance. This one features gorgeous honey-brown color and just very fine porosity that impacts the eye appeal not at all, as the consistent coloration and soft surface quality attenuate any such distractions. Each side appears perfectly centered, though the date on the reverse is merged with the rim. As mentioned by the consignor, the issues from 1785 tend to be plagued with planchet flaws and striations, yet this one managed to avoid most such troubling issues, and indeed features hard, glossy surface quality despite the slight roughness. A rather amazing coin that is unaffected by any post-mint impairments or circulation problems.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
