Lot Title:

1760 Voce Populi, "VOOE" variety, Halfpenny. Nelson 3, Zelinka 7-E, Breen 227. Rarity-3, 116.3 grains. VF.
|
Description:
|
(Ex. Stack's "John J. Ford, Jr." 10/2004: 19) Moderately encrusted on both sides, with most of the encrustation clinging to the letters and devices, though the active green verdigris referenced by Stack's has been professionally conserved since the Ford sale. Indeed, by comparison to the original Stack's plate, the present appearance is markedly improved, with original smoothness in the fields more evident upon inspection. The obverse is remarkably well centered, while the reverse is struck a few percentage points off-center north, leaving the top of BERN slightly clipped, the fortuitous tradeoff being a very strong date. Misspelling of VOCE ("VOOE") is attributed to a die break completing closure of the "C"; in an earlier die state, the "C" remains properly open. An attractive coin with a very attractive pedigree!
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
