Lot Title:
1968-D Lincoln cent struck on clad dime planchet.
Description:
An unsurpassable "coolness factor" attends this lot, which consists primarily of a 1968-D cent struck on a clad dime planchet. One "Mr. Copeland" sent the coin to CoinWorld in late 1968 for their opinion, and it was returned with a card on which was printed the following: "Dear Mr. Copeland: We are happy to inform you the your 1968-D cent has been struck on a clad dime planchet. It weighs the normal weight of a clad dime, which proves it's authenticity. The enclosed reprint illustrates and explains such off-metal coins, along with an estimate of their value. This is the first 1968 cent on dime planchet that we have seen and we've taken the liberty of photographing it on our office camera to be used in a coming feature on 68 coins. As is our custom, we will withhold your name when printing it. Most Sincerely, J.G. Johnson (signed). This original card is included, as is the original envelope, which was registered on Dec 31, 1968. Cataloger's note: little Dixon, MO, the hometown of Mr. Johnson, is only about fifteen miles from your cataloger's own home town, proving that the Ozarks has been a true hotbed of numismatic activity since the 1960s!
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
