Lot Title:

Undated (C. 1694) London Elephant Token (Breen 186, Hodder Dies 2-B, R-4)/ Thick Planchet/ God Preserve London. NGC AU-55 BN.
Description:
Although probably a little less detailed than might be expected of a technical "AU" grade, the NGC AU-55 commercial grade seems to take into account the unusually nice planchet that was used in producing this coin. Elephant tokens of both thick and thin format are known to have been struck on streaky planchets, prone to lamination problems and subsequent spotting. Despite weak denticulation along the left and upper obverse borders, the devices are actually quite well centered on both sides, and this example shows little to none of the die alignment problems seen on others. Deep walnut-brown patina attests to substantiates excellent original surface preservation. Negligible rim bruises (partially obscured by the slab) account for the only post mint impairments, and they are trivial.
