Lot Title: 1902 $10.00. Tombstone, AZ Charter# 6439 Blue Seal. XF.
Description: The First National Bank of Tombstone, Arizona. Lot #3 from our July, 2007 auction. Remarkable though it may seem, the present note is the second consigned to us by Mr. Costello, grandson of one Mary M. Costello, whose signature appears on the note itself. Further enhancing the mystique of this extraordinary piece is, of course, the town name, steeped as it is in American Western lore, for it was here that the Gunfight at the O.K Corral took place, and here is where one will find perhaps the most famous graveyard in all the Old West - Boot Hill. Our note is an unprocessed and Choice XF example that has never been owned outside the Costello estate. It displays bright, white paper, superb signatures, excellent crispness, and exquisite color. The cashier's line is signed by J.P. Connolly, who was with the bank until 1925. Mr. Connolly was hired by Costello to help her rebuild the bank's reputation shortly after she purchased it, and their efforts helped resurrect it from the scandal and corruption previously surrounding it. This note is rare -- and the demand for fresh material -- especially of such extraordinary historic significance and provenance -- is insatiable. Acquisition of this sublime note would be the apogee of collecting endeavor, and I tip my hat to the bidder willing to test his the limits to achieve that accomplishment.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
