Lot Title: 1902 $10.00. Tombstone, AZ Charter# 6439 Blue Seal. XF.
Description: The First National Bank of Tombstone, Arizona. This same note was included in our most recent Summer Sale, and is now being offered again, at a much lower reserve. What follows is the description of the note as it appeared previously: Signed by Mary M. Costello herself, this note is likely tied for the second best-preserved example from this beloved bank (the "National Bank Note Census" does report a CU in existence), and it is certainly more steeped in history than any currently reported, considering that -remarkably - it was consigned by Mrs. Costello's grandson! Yes, this note has maintained a special place in the family, and comes to us now in momentous fashion. An unabashedly fresh, original XF note, the signatures can only be described as ageless. J.P. Connolly applied the cashier's signature, and the fact that he left the bank in 1925 explains why other examples seen from this bank are signed by Ruth Costello. Despite being cut by hand, the margins do not encroach upon the design. The paper, though toned around the creases on the back, is crisp, and the ink presence is choice for the grade. Over the past couple of years, very few notes from this bank have surfaced. Scotsman has had the honor of auctioning one, and two have been auctioned through other firms. Out of this mere handful, the present note is far and away the superior example in every aspect; frankly, the comparison is not even close.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
