Lot Title:
1857-S ANACS AU-50.
Description:
All San Francisco three-dollar gold coins are relatively scarce (except perhaps 1856-S), and become expensive in mint state grades; thus the AU level becomes very attractive to collectors. This 1857-S is isolatedly abraded above Liberty's temple and across her eyebrow, but is otherwise free of distractions. The date is in shallow relief as usual, but the mintmark is very bold, and tendrils of mint luster still gather 'round the letters and devices. A coin with more original surface quality than usual, despite the aforementioned localized abrading.

1857-S NCS XF details/improperly cleaned.
Dull grey-gold surfaces are neither glossy nor blatantly cleaned, but the luster isn't quite "right" for a three-dollar gold at the XF grade level. As is sometimes noted for the issue, the date is... |
