Lot Title:
1853-O VF.
Description:
The 1853-O "no arrows" is one of the legendary keys to the Seated Liberty series, probably the third toughest issue in middle circulated grades, and a very difficult coin to find without problems. For reasons unknown, the majority seen (or at least the majority seen available for purchase) tend to be damaged, bent or imperfect in some way. This example is just shy of being perfect, but comes pretty close in a VF-20 grade. There is no evidence of cleaning; on the contrary, the very good patina serves to cover up some notable scratches in the lower right obverse field. Five minor ticks appear on the reverse rim, but even taken all together, these defects do not encroach on the grade assessment much. As is the case more often than not for this desirable coin, the "18" in the date are weak, the "1" being barely discernible.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
