Lot Title:
1859-S NGC AU-58.
Description:
Late date coronet double-eagles are common to the point of being essentially bullion pieces even in near-mint-state grades, but for examples of the first decade of production, the story is quite different. This 1859-S displays lovely creamy satin frost over all the fields and devices, and generates ample eye appeal from the rolling cartwheel luster and fine strike. Many collectors have an appreciation for the off-center portrait of these earlier coins, and this one features pleasing corn-yellow accents and an appearance that could easily be mistaken for mint state.

Mustard-gold and a trifle blunt in appearance due to a weak strike, along with some loss of detail to circulation, of course. A solitary bagmark rests near the truncation of Liberty's neck. |
