Lot Title:
1885 MS-63.
Description:
A paltry sum of just 5,200 half dollars were minted by Philadelphia in 1885, yet those that have survived until today are usually of exceptional quality, and most are prooflike, as are the other quarter and half-dollar issues of 1879 - 1890. The visually astounding example offered here features only the most delicate traces of prooflike character, accounted for by a little reflectivity off the reverse fields, and even less for the obverse fields, with overall satiny frost that yields remarkably lustrous appeal. It is hard to imagine a cleaner or more thoroughly detailed business strike coin than this, except over Liberty's head. All other details are brought up in exquisite high relief. This coin produces downy white effect for the most part, relieved only near the rims by a tasteful hint of honey-gold toning. Vague, wispy hairlines in the right obverse field are the only grade determinants that prevent this amazing jewel from nearing perfection.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
