Lot Title:
1860 CLARK-GRUBER. PCGS AU-58.
Description:
Being minted of softer metallic alloy than Federal gold coins, the Clark-Gruber coins are prone to taking on marks and abrasions with alacrity, but this example is unusually free of such distractions. Putting a loupe to this coin reveals only a trivial partial reed mark midway up the right side of the mountain, another tiny dig above the eagle's neck and a pair of shallow pin scratch luster grazes beneath "BER" on the reverse. Furthermore, though the popularity of the issue has led to many near-mint examples being cleaned or processed to simulate uncirculated examples, unusually wholesome, unmolested surface quality remains undisturbed for this piece. Extensive russet-gold patina cedes to hints of greenish iridescence around the lettering and devices, particularly around the eagle, and lovely cartwheel luster beckons. The strike is expectedly soft on the highpoints, but the centering is perfect, and the rims are free of any disturbances. Many coins certified as "mint state" hold less eye appeal than this piece.
