Lot Title:
(1795) Washington Liberty and Security Penny, Edge Lettered, Baker 30, 270 grains, VG.
Description:
A richly patinated and well worn example of this large token (270 grains), which was designed by Thomas Wyon and struck by Peter Kempson in Birmingham in 1795. The rims display fewer dings than typical for this issue, the only obvious one resting at 3:00 on the obverse, but a pair of old scratches traverse the eagle's left (observed) wing. Edge lettering proclaims: AN ASYLUM FOR THE OPPRESSED OF ALL NATIONS. A small die crack inside the bottom curve of the "S" in WASHINGTON helps to affirm attribution.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
