(About The Images)
1866 PCGS PF-65DCAM. 1866 PCGS PF-65DCAM.
Lot Title: 1866 PCGS PF-65DCAM.
Description: Due to the thin, delicate nature of the planchets used to strike silver three cent silver coins, they could not be easily polished by hand, and so a coin struck with very deep mirrors was the exception rather than the rule. Contrast this with three cent nickel coins, which had larger and more durable planchets that accepted hand polishing quite easily, and it becomes immediately apparent why so many of the latter type can be found with a high degree of reflectivity. Nevertheless, the present silver coin generates tremendous eye appeal with dazzling proof surfaces that are about as flawless and clear as can ever be found for the type. Indeed, your cataloger found that while examining the coin, the mirror image of the loupe was easily discerned in the coin's fields, an excellent indicator of just how good the mirrors are. In addition, the captivating, frothy devices float readily right on top of the liquid metal fields, producing that all-important deep cameo effect that is so elusive for the type.

This coin features contrast that is virtually on par with that found on other denominations, and in combination with the which the crystal clear brilliance, the flashy eye appeal is dramatic and undeniable. As a final point of discussion, the lack of toning allows the maximum amount of proof quality to reach the viewer's eye, which is quite unlike the vast majority of toned coins, which will tend to be deeply patinated. There are certainly silver three cent coins with higher numerical grades, but very rarely does one stumble upon such a gem as this, combining deep cameo contrast and blazing brilliance in a manner that almost defies adequate description.

Unquestionably a business-strike example, rather than a more common "proof", the grade is determined more by surface quality than by actual wear. Luster breaks cannot be detected, but just enough...
