Lot Title:
1869 NGC MS-61.
Description:
The low initial mintage of merely 4,300 pieces for 1869 suffered inordinate attrition, leaving probably just about a hundred examples in existence today. Although they did not share dies with proof coins, nearly all high grade business strikes seen are at least somewhat prooflike, some having been so-designated by the grading services. The present coin aligns well with these comments, as it bears gleaming, semi-reflective fields and manifests distinct cameo effect, particularly on the obverse. Sharply struck, it has the distinction of an obverse that is actually a little stronger than the reverse based on technical merits, as it suffers fewer abrasions on the more important side. Thus, the NGC grade will seem slightly conservative at first glance. Pleasing color rounds out the package.
