Lot Title:
1831 AU Details, cut on neck..
Description:
For every date of issue of the "capped head left, reduced diameter" quarter-eagle, mintage figures did not even approach 5000, automatically ensuring the scarcity of any survivor. Combine that with the fact that survival rates were paltry at best and you have a formula for a gold type coin that is decidedly difficult in any level of preservation. The diameter for this gold denomination decreased with each passing type, from the "capped bust right" to the "capped bust left", to the "capped head left", and finally to the present type, as the mint fought its way through technical difficulties that made it difficult to produce coins of consistently acceptable quality. Even with the slightly reduced diameter, it is a numismatic rarity to find one that is fully struck, and so grading parameters must take this into account. Your cataloger believes the present coin actually possesses AU-50 details, and the surfaces retain decently original patina, though trifling glossy texture visits a limited area of each side. The only detraction is a straight, moderate cut on Liberty's lower neck.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
