Lot Title:

1799 9 over 8 (S-188). PCGS VG-8.
Description:
S-188 is the overdate, while S-189 is the "perfect" date, but either way, 1799 in any grade is the undisputed key to a date run of large cents. Contributing to the escalated value of the issue is the fact that very few survive without problems. This 1799/8 is graded VG-8 by PCGS, and would be accorded "problem-free" status by any sensible copper collector who understands the limitations of the issue. The surfaces are dark as always, only mildly corroded on the obverse and a little more so on the reverse, yet overall the smoothness is well above average. The bottom of each digit in the date falls slightly off the flan, yet this does not impact their readability, and the entire reverse is eminently legible. An EAC grade of 6 should be a conservative assessment.

1799 Large Cent, ANACS AG-3, corroded, edge damaged
Overall, the grade assigned by ANACS may not convey much useful information about this rare copper, although the S-189 attribution is correct. As this coin is in a later die state, with the date... |
