Lot Title:

1799 Large Cent, ANACS AG-3, corroded, edge damaged
|
Description:
|
Overall, the grade assigned by ANACS may not convey much useful information about this rare copper, although the S-189 attribution is correct. As this coin is in a later die state, with the date stronger than LIBERTY, we believe the correct sharpness grade is "G-6", though that may be of little consideration in light of the surface quality. The fact is that this dark coin is rather moderately afflicted with corrosion, but more importantly, the eye appeal is significantly impaired by disruption of the right edge, caused by some sort of impact damage that has raised metal on both sides. On the reverse, only "TED STATES OF AMERIC" is readable, though the denomination is mostly present. Only ghostly remnants of the denomination remain. EAC 1.

S-188 is the overdate, while S-189 is the "perfect" date, but either way, 1799 in any grade is the undisputed key to a date run of large cents. Contributing to the escalated value of the issue is the... |
