(About The Images)
1880 PCGS MS-64. 1880 PCGS MS-64.
Lot Title: 1880 PCGS MS-64.
Description: A preposterously small quantity of 1036 three dollar gold coins were struck for circulation in 1880, automatically qualifying the issue for consideration as a rarity (although it should be noted that seven issues in the series had original mintages below even a thousand). In the case of any low mintage coin, the dies would have been retired long before their life expectancy, leading one to expect struck coins to exhibit outstanding strike characteristics, and that certainly is the case here.

This coin displays mouthwatering prooflike character that is defined by somewhat mirrored fields and obvious frost across the raised devices, not to mention sharp details. Fiery mint luster relieves the reflective fields in areas, and light patina alternates with pristine areas to render curiously striated concentric rings of varying surface texture. It is an effect that defies simple explanation and needs to be seen to be appreciated.
