Lot Title:

1921-S Buffalo Nickel Mint Error, Obverse Laminated Planchet. PCGS AU-50.
Description:
Planchet flaws and laminations are an inevitable occasional consequence of the minting process, and ANA standards suggest that they should not detract from a grade, but the 1921-S buffalo nickel is an issue notorious for alloy problems, and sometimes, perfectly nice coins will not be certified due to the appearance of laminations. PCGS chose to identify this example, graded AU-50, as a "mint error", identified by "Obv Laminated Plan". The linear flaw is almost hidden within the natural flow of the Indian's portrait, while the reverse has no such problems. While laminations certainly are the result of a deficiency in the manufacturing process, categorizing them as "mint errors" is a bit of a stretch, though it does permit justification for certification.... From the Tiger's Lair Collection.
