1877-S Trade dollar, MS-60 details, cleaned 1877-S Trade dollar, MS-60 details, cleaned
Lot Title: 1877-S Trade dollar, MS-60 details, cleaned
Description: Although the cleaning is by no means severe, it has left behind just enough hairlines to most likely prevent certification. A blush of iris-purple color envelopes Liberty's effigy, while the reverse remains untoned. Extensive original luster remains despite the reported problems.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Low Estimate: $380.00
High Estimate: $475.00

919The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$950.00
1877-S NGC MS-62.
Medium to strong intensity of colors leads to a somewhat dusky appearance overall, though flashing the coin in the light reveals marvelous underlying colors and potent luster. Denim-grey mixes with...
636The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$950.00
1877-S ANACS MS-61.
Purchased by the consignor more than a year ago, he has now upgraded to an even nicer Trade dollar type, though this ANACS MS-61 example is no slouch. Champagne-gold tone limits the effects of some...
750The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$450.00
1877-S VF and 1878-S AU.
1877-S could almost contend for some XF consideration, but it may have been rather harmlessly dipped at some point, as the wide open fields are a little white. The 1878-S is definitely superior in...
798The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$425.00
1877-S NGC AU-58.
Rather mottled tin-beige tone tends to distract from technical aspirations, making it difficult to evaluate luster. However, sharpness of the details is easy to see with a loupe, and anyone who...
799The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$400.00
1877-S Uncirculated details/whizzed and 1878-S AU details/cleaned.
Surface issues are an unavoidable caveat with this pair of Trade dollars, but at least the coins are genuine, as guaranteed by Scotsman Auction Company. 1877-S has AU-50 details, but has been highly...
800The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,100.00
1877-S TRADE. ANACS MS-61 (ANACS case has chip on lower rim).
Overall eye-appeal is actually a touch nicer than expected of just MS-61, with the presence of some old hairlines nicely attenuated by a slender layer of champagne-gold tone. A thin sliver of...
801The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$925.00
1877-S TRADE. NGC MS-61.
Uneven striking pressure might be responsible for a perceptibly weak date and minor softness over the highest obverse details, while the reverse has satisfactory overall sharpness. Luster on the...
590The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$140.00
1877-S PCGS Genuine.
Surfaces are glossy and shiny enough to immediately elicit agreement with the PCGS Genuine-94 code, which indicates "altered surfaces", although it might be sufficient to simply state that the coin...
699The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$575.00
1877-S PCGS Genuine.
Unnaturally prooflike and much too bright due to professionally polished fields, it is quite possible that someone was hoping to pass this off as an actual proof once the nefarious alteration of the...
700The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$390.00
1877-S ANACS MS-60 details/chopmarked.
Chopmarks ought to be the most obvious evidence in the known universe to show that a Trade dollar circulated, yet grading services continue to entitle such pieces to mint-state grades. At least ANACS...
701The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$2,900.00
1877-S double die reverse. MS-62.
This 1877-S Trade dollar represents everything that is most desirable in the pursuit of truly wholesome, original coins. Prowling beneath the unbelievably attractive patina is a prodigious supply of...
557The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$160.00
1877-S PCGS Genuine.
PCGS Genuine-94 indicates "altered surfaces", a code that seems a little overused on their part, as this coin displays simply an overly aggressive cleaning. The fields have been polished to the point...
558The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$400.00
1877-S MS-60/dipped.
Scintillating, blinding blast-white luster shines off this Trade dollar with much pizzazz, though the brilliance is simply a little too much for a coin that is 130 years old. There is little to no...
855The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$290.00
1877-S and 1878-S XF.
1877-S and 1878-S Trade dollars are represented in this lot by deeply original XF examples. The former coin is probably a half grade nicer than its companion. Two coin lot.
571The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,500.00
1877-S Trade dollar, Double Die Reverse, ANACS MS-62.
Plenty of cartwheel mint luster glistens nicely from beneath a powdery layer of aluminum-silver patina, giving this coin a premium quality appearance for the assigned grade of just MS-62. With an...
527The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$475.00
1877-S AU-53.
This is a 100% toned Trade Dollar with original mint luster and strongly struck devices. There is a tiny bit of wear and a few marks, but they are commensurate for the grade.
528The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$260.00
1877-S AU-55.
This specimen's glistening silver surfaces are delightfully dabbled with mauve and russet peripheral toning. Slightly hairlined and minimally marked, and its design elements are sharp.
675The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$220.00
1877-S AU-58.
A highly lustrous type example from this favored series with surfaces that are white, untoned, and semi-prooflike. The marks and hairlines are congruent for the grade ascribed, and its motifs exhibit...
