Lot Title:
1846-O Coronet quarter-eagle, PCGS AU-55
Description:
Although this is an issue that typically left the New Orleans mint with weak central details, the example offered here is actually substantially better defined than many competing examples in like grade. Often, the reverse shield is undefined, and Liberty's ear is sometimes entirely absent, but this coin affords the viewer nearly a full complement of hair detail, and the eagle is missing detail only on the left (observed) leg. As expected for 1846-O, the mint luster is somewhat muted, but that is only partially due to circulation; even uncirculated examples have poor luster. Specialists in this series should be delighted by this offering.
