(About The Images)
1796 S-87 NGC VF-20 BN. 1796 S-87 NGC VF-20 BN.
Lot Title: 1796 S-87 NGC VF-20 BN.
Description: Dramatically superior to the typical 1796 Liberty cap in this grade range; in fact, nearly equal in details grade and net grade (EAC collectors likely would consider this coin to have details of VG-10) due to the planchet being only slightly rough by comparison to other examples. The only defects of note are a scratch from the top of Liberty’s head to the rim, and another on the left side of the denomination. The other deficiencies involve production issues, namely some dentilation missing from the lower left obverse rim, and a slightly week denomination, but these are trivial issues considering the meager supply of appealing 1796 Liberty Cap in today’s market. EAC 12.

121The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$4,250.00
1796 (S-81) PCGS XF-40.
For either the Liberty cap or the draped bust type, 1796 is always a very difficult issue in the large-cent series to locate nice, yet this example would look just as presentable in or outside the...
108The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$390.00
1796 (S-91, R-3) F.
Cents of either type for 1796 are devilishly difficult in any sort of decent condition, so this example will have no difficulty finding a new collection to upgrade. The reverse is the nicer side,...
440The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$410.00
1796 Crowded Head/Triple Leaf Under "T" (S-89, R-3). F details,...
Despite considerable loss of detail to the effects of circulation, all devices are prominently visible, and even both rims remain mostly present. Coffee-bean dark patina helps to mask the fairly mild...
495The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$475.00
1796 Crowded Head/ Triple Leaf Under "T" (S-89, R-3). F.
Much dentilation remains on both rims, though the consistently dark cappuccino-brown coloration lacks the contrast needed to embolden the details. A small dig on the right side of the obverse and a...
211The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$2,700.00
1796 Reverse of 1796, S-91, R-3. PCGS VF-20.
This "very wide date" issue always depicts a die failure on the obverse midway between the rim and the nose. Its surfaces have a rich mahogany brown aspect. Some localized planchet roughness appears...
