Lot Title:
Three Shield and Two Liberty Nickels.
Description:
Our consignor insisted that these five old nickels be sold together, and as such, there is terrific potential here. This lot commences with a pair of 1866 “rays” nickels that look like twins separated at birth. Struck off of different dies, they feature virtually identical strike quality, though one has slightly better shield line detail than the other. Each grades AU or better. They are followed by an 1882 that is quite difficult to evaluate and grade due to some garish toning on both sides. It appears to be an uncirculated piece with plenty of reflectivity hibernating beneath the wild indigo, orange, and mellow yellow colors. An original key date 1894 Liberty nickel is next, and as an AU-55, it is probably the choice coin of the lot. 1894 has risen considerably in value over the past several years as the fourth key to the series. Finally, an 1895 Liberty nickel joins this quintet and presents an extraordinarily strong strike atop nearly prooflike surfaces. Some sparse PVC film appears to be obstructing the luster, and your cataloger feels this coin may benefit considerably from proper conservation. Five coin lot.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
