(About The Images)
1884-S AU-58++. 1884-S AU-58++.
Lot Title: 1884-S AU-58++.
Description: Anyone who collects Morgan dollars in Mint State knows full well that the 1884-S is one of the very most difficult issues to locate without evidence of circulation. Such evidence may take the form of rub on the cheek, interruption of luster flow lines in the fields, diminishment of the original mint luster, or evidence of contact with non-coin items, which would indicate use outside the boundaries of the minting area. In addition, of the very few Mint State examples known, the majority would technically grade only MS-60, but some have been cleaned in the misguided hope of enhancing their grade. Grade is such an important factor with regard to this coin that it is a worthy exercise to discuss each grading point in detail. The present example is unquestionably free of any cleaning or other processing, which removes one significant barrier to a possible Mint State assessment. Though facing up as mostly untoned, the thin veneer of hazel toning across the lower two-thirds of the obverse confirms the presence of original surfaces, and absolutely no hairlines or patches of friction are visible in the fields or on the devices. Liberty’s cheek is not as clean as would be expected of a high Mint State coin. Under a loupe, myriad tiny abrasions are seen, yielding a slightly rough appearance, and there is a moderate mark on her chin. However, we must consider the fact that these coins were intended for commerce, and were not stored gently at the mint while awaiting their introduction into circulation. The coins were stored in bags and boxes that were shoved and jostled around such that they were frequently colliding with one another. There are no particular indications that the observed marks are due to anything other than incidental coin-to-coin contact. Granted, there is a shallow scrape near the bottom of Liberty’s neck, but it too can be easily explained as a bagmark. The luster on this coin is bright, fresh, and original, not processed or augmented by any artificial means. A scattering of superficial abrasions in the left field are typical of these large coin, but the luster is not subdued in their vicinity, so they do not appear to be due to circulation. As if on jury duty, given the above evidence, it then falls upon the conscientious numismatist to decide whether an Uncirculated grade is a qualified judgment, or whether there is any shadow of a doubt with regard to a stint in circulation so brief that the coin just barely misses a Mint State assessment. In keeping with our conservative disposition, the Scotsman Auction Company has decided to bestow a grade of AU-58, granted the fact that this coin fits the uppermost exemplification of the grade. We will not be surprised in the slightest if it bids up to the MS-60 level.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

804The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$675.00
1884-S, 1901, and 1892-CC, as described.

807The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$425.00
1884-S NGC AU-55.
Fairly easy to locate even in AU, choice examples become a bit more challenging, and forget about purchasing even the lowest quality UNC, as that price tag begins around $7000! Luckily, the collector...
808The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,850.00
1884-S PCGS AU-58.
Infamous for the absurd escalation in price between AU and MS-60, an UNC-ish white 1884-S often fills the bill for the Morgan dollar collector unwilling to spend thousands of dollars on a two-point...

1884-S, and an 1893-O, both NGC AU-55.
Particularly expensive in UNC grade, this pair of better Morgan dollars may represent exceptional value at the AU-55 grade level assigned by NGC. 1884-S features much the exhilarating quality of...

1884-S and 1886-O, both NGC AU-55.

1884-S NGC AU-53, 1895-O NGC F-12, and an 1896-O NGC AU details.
Mike Wrinkle Collection. 1884-S has the famous "look" seemingly always seen for the date, with some edge luster, but dull, light wear on the highpoints. 1895-O will seem a trifle pale at first...
990The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,300.00
1884-S ICG AU-58.
The date is legendary, of course, for being worth only a few bucks in XF grades... but thousands of dollars in just MS-60. It is always a little difficult to interpolate a proper bid for such...
759The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$481.00
1884-S, 1893, and a 1904-S PCGS XF-45.
The nicely circulated XF-45 grade level eases much pain of obtaining these much better dates in the silver dollar series, since they become drastically more expensive at MS-60 and above. Some luster...
879The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$380.00
1884-S NGC AU-55.
Olive-grey patina enshrouds Liberty's portrait and evenly covers the reverse, and that results in a subdued, low-contrast appearance. Substantial luster remains, and under a bright light, appears to...
662The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,500.00
1884-S PCGS AU-58.
1884-S has the dubious distinction of being worth an affordable sum at AU-50, then rising astronomically to a financial level twenty-five times higher at just MS-60. Outrageous! It is one of...
781The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$2,100.00
1884-S/S VAM-3 NGC AU-58.
From the standpoint of actual wear, this 1884-S is about as close to mint-state as a silver dollar can possibly get, since there seems to be no metal actually displaced from circulation rub, and the...
602The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$150.00
1884-S AU.
1884-S is notorious as a common coin in circulated grades that takes a large leap in value at the AU, then skyrockets in MS-60 and above. This tin-grey example displays excellent definition and...
664The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$425.00
1884-S NGC AU-55.
Limited visibility of mint luster probably pays the larger role in the grade assignment of AU-55 by NGC, as there is practically no wear apparent outside of very mild rub on the high points. Warm...
773The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$290.00
1884-S ANACS AU-55.
Very lustrous and essentially white. An accurately graded coin with a better than average strike.
800The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$200.00
1884-S ANACS AU-50.
Rolling original mint luster can be seen on both the obverse and reverse of this tougher date Morgan Dollar. There is very little wear and few marks for the grade.
663The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$1,000.00
1884-S AU-58.
Only faint signs of circulation are evident on this still very lustrous San Francisco issue. It is, perhaps, the ideal collector coin as examples graded any higher quickly increases the value by...
664The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$2,400.00
1884-S MS-63.
A crimson iridescence copiously graces this scarce San Francisco issue. It may have been subjected to a light cleaning as evidenced by a filmy aspect that is seen when tilting the piece under a light...

1884-S AU-58++.
An extremely elusive date starting in About Uncirculated condition and escalating in the ascending Uncirculated grade levels. Magnificent brilliance glistens from highly lustrous surfaces making an...
773The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$0.00
1884-S MS-60+.
A hard to encounter date in grades About Uncirculated and higher. The Eagle's breast feathers display more prominent details than the usually observed specimens in this grade. The ticks and scuffs...
