Description:

An 1871-G Liberty Head California Fractional Gold Octagonal Half Dollar designated BG-923 Rarity-5. It was manufactured by Robert B. Gray & Co. with a crudely reeded edge, applied after it was struck. The relief on the reverse is shallow, and die polishing lines are observed randomly interspersed with some light hairlines. A fragment of the rim at 12:30 broke away during the minting process. The piece is prooflike with a golden orange aspect.
