1803 Small Stars Reverse, Breen 1-A, R-4. NGC AU-55.
Description:
The Heraldic Eagle reverse design was first employed in 1797 for the Capped Bust To Right eagle type, and its usage remained in effect until 1804. Two reverse type classifications are given for 1803 eagles. These are ascribed by the reverse stars being either small or large. Although the mintage for this date is recorded as a paltry 15,017, six reverse dies were paired to a single, common obverse die. Its opulent gold coloration is further enhanced with rich, copious orange hues. The perceived surface marks are not visually detracting, however the obverse shows evidence of adjustment marks. Evidence of die clashing is observed on both the obverse and the reverse. Particularly, outlines of the clouds are evident at the date area, while Liberty's features are noticed amongst the shield and Eagle motifs. Even though there's striking weaknesses on Liberty's drapery lines and on the Eagle's breast feathers, the remaining details are well depicted on this historic and quite popular issue.

1803 Small Stars Reverse. ANACS XF-45 details/damaged/cleaned.
Details are rather sharp, as denoted by the ANACS XF-45, but the texture is completely dominated by an extraordinary number of tiny contact marks that are certainly the source of the "damaged"... |

1803 Small Stars Reverse. AU Details Cleaned.
Wow, what a rare coin! This elusive Liberty Capped Bust Eagle has strong AU detail and brilliant color. The unfortunate thing is that someone cleaned this piece of American History, thankfully not... |
