(About The Images)
1895-S AU-50. 1895-S AU-50.
Lot Title: 1895-S AU-50.
Description: Semi-bright surfaces convey substantial mint luster around both sides, and the reverse appears as a borderline AU. Weakness in the hairlines above the ear seem due entirely to wear, as the balance of the coin implies a somewhat better than average strike for the issue, including an abundance of breast feather detail. There are no singularly detrimental marks or defects to mar the excellent appearance of this semi-key Morgan dollar, save for a couple of small reeding marks on Liberty’s portrait, and one above the Eagle’s head, that are of a trivial nature. Judging by mild reflectivity in the wide-open fields, it is likely this coin was somewhat prooflike at the time of striking. Wholly untoned, and silvery grey in color appearance. From “The Glencoe Album Collection.”

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

854The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$650.00
1895-S NGC VF-30.
Sometimes, a coin is "picture perfect" for the grade, and such is the case here. Details are just a trifle to flat over the ear and at the eagle's breast to allow for the XF level, though elsewhere...
855The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,250.00
1895-S PCGS AU-50.
Rich olive-blue patina drapes the obverse, with the reverse dressed mostly in slightly uneven ash-grey and silver tones. In higher grade, either circulation strike for 1895 presents a challenge to...
941The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$575.00
1895-S F, and a 1903-S XF.
Marshmallow Collection. Much better San Francisco dollars make up this circulated trio, and both are reasonably nice, vintage quality pieces. 1895-S shows considerable wear, yet the details are more...
942The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$390.00
1895-S PCGS F-12.
Deep navy-blue patina contends with rich sienna-grey for supremacy over each side, embellished by a very slightly glossy effect overall. There is no question whatsoever as to the vintage surface...
943The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$575.00
1895-S VF.
Roman Powers Collection. Reasonably original despite slightly glossy surfaces, details fall very close to the XF level. VF-35 should be an appropriate grade overall. A faint near-vertical...
944The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$3,100.00
1895-S NGC MS-60.
Up through the AU grades, 1895-S beats out the New Orleans issue for higher value, but though it certainly escalates above MS-60, the New Orleans coin jumps rapidly into the stratosphere. Thus, date...
1014The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$425.00
1895-S PCGS F-12.
A hole often left blank in typical album collections that come over the counter, the 1895-S remains affordable at the Fine level, but demands a formidable premium in just the next grade up (VF). ...
812The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,050.00
1895-S AU details/cleaned.
At first glance, this semi-key has very much the appearance of a lightly circulated proof, with underlying reflectivity that emanates from the fields. Some blueberry iridescence has settled into the...
732The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,650.00
Four 1895-S Morgan dollars.
A quartet of 1895-S dollars all bear uncanny resemblance to one another, which comes as no surprise since they are all fully original coins with moderate to heavy wear. Conservatively, these should...
733The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$450.00
1895-S ANACS F-15.
Bold details exemplify a coin just on the cusp of "the next grade up", as many potential bidders would guess this to be a VF coin out of the holder. Faints hint of glossy olive-grey undertone breaks...
734The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,950.00
1895-S NGC AU-55.
The obverse is undeniably close to UNC and was likely semi-prooflike at the time of manufacture, as some reflectivity still emanates from the extreme periphery. Heavy patina layers over the reverse...
798The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$8,250.00
1895-S PCGS MS-64.
PCGS population statistics don't lie when it comes to the 1895-S in high grade: 358 are in MS-64 holders, with only 32 graded higher (and NGC has put barely half these numbers into the same grade...
917The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$390.00
1895-S ANACS F-15.
Acrid olive-grey tone completely overshadows the entire coin, relieved in some areas by hints of navy-blue. Fortunately, there are no hits or rim bumps to detract, and the overall details are rather...
918The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,100.00
1895-S (VAM-2) PCGS XF-45.
A little luster scuffles around the peripheral lettering, but makes very little headway into the fields, even on the reverse. The only noticeable wear is in the usual areas, above Liberty's ear and...
708The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$625.00
1895-S VF.
Details are at the upper end of VF, but this coin may have been "soap and watered" at one time, leaving a hint of glossy texture in the fields. VF-20 is probably a suitable net assessment overall. ...
833The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,550.00
Four 1895-S.
It isn't all that often that bidders are afforded an opportunity to pick up, not one, not two, but four 1895-S dollars with a single shrewd winning bid. All of these have details narrowly ranging...
834The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$500.00
1895-S VF.
Rock-steady original surfaces are generally the perfect tint of silvery-grey, with a thin border of deep charcoal patina embedded in the recesses, giving the perfect "look" for the VF-20 grade. The...
835The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$14,500.00
1895-S VAM-4 NGC MS-65 PL.
The typical 1895-S Morgan dollar is not well struck, it is not usually found prooflike, and it is certainly not typical to locate outstanding examples in high grade. For that matter, one might not...
630The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$575.00
1895-S PCGS VF-20.
The PCGS grade of VF-20 conveys the level of detail and overall appearance of this semi-key Morgan with pinpoint accuracy, given that it is a strictly original and problem-free coin. At this level,...
631The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$4,400.00
1895-S PCGS MS-63.
Regardless of mint of origin, a Morgan dollar dated 1895 is instantly recognized as a significant acquisition in high grade by most collectors, and the 1895-S begins to become quite pricey at the...
803The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$900.00
1895-S PCGS XF-45
While the level of detail seems a little better than the XF-45 grade given by PCGS, this coin lacks the luster of a fully AU coin. Nonetheless, Morgan dollar collectors will appreciate the fine...
736The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$625.00
1895-S PCGS VF-30.
As does it's "O" mint mark counterpart, the 1895-S rises rapidly in value through the grading spectrum, and even intermediate grades take on importance. Although no mint luster is present (which is...
737The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$800.00
1895-S XF.
Consistent dove-grey color dominates this coin, and some faint glossiness may hint at an old cleaning, but your cataloger feels this coin should certify should the new owner choose to do so. The only...
738The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$775.00
1895-S XF, cleaned.
With detail not far from the "about uncirculated" level, one might hope for a coin like this to retain more mint luster. Regardless of a reasonably original appearance, loss of flowlines and some...
739The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,150.00
1895-S AU.
Obvious mint luster and substantial remaining detail lead to a grade assessment of AU-50 for this difficult Morgan dollar. Although the surfaces may seem a little bright, that impression derives at...
740The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,700.00
1895-S/S VAM-3, HOT 50, ANACS AU-58.
VAM-3 is characterized by a repunched mint mark, with the original punched northwest and leaning left of the corrected position. This example is densely patinated with deep-platinum patina surrounded...
741The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$5,750.00
1895-S PCGS MS-63.
Aggressive buffing of the reverse die is the cause for a great many vertical die polish lines on the reverse of this blinding bright white key Morgan dollar, and the obverse displays a considerable...
741The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$475.00
1895-S Morgan dollar F-15
A curious relationship exists between the 1895-O and 1895-S in that the latter coin is more valuable in grades below MS-60, while above that point, the New Orleans skyrockets in value by comparison to...
742The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$2,200.00
1895-S Morgan dollar, MS-60 details, scratched, net AU-58 PL
A silver-white coin with bright surfaces and a lot of appeal derived from the clear, prooflike appearance. Because of the excellent depth of the mirrors, myriad micro-hairlines in the fields are...
743The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$4,500.00
1895-S Morgan dollar, NGC MS-63
This very difficult coin is sheer silvery-white and entirely devoid of any toning whatsoever. Plentiful mint luster is typical of an MS-63 coin, and the grade is determined primarily by trivial marks...
853The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$450.00
1895-S VF-20.
Three or four short circulation gashes appear on Liberty’s cheek, but they are sufficiently shallow that no downgrade is required. Despite substantial wear, there is just enough reflectivity in...
855The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$3,200.00
1895-S NGC MS-60.
This desirable date exhibits a satinlike brilliance that's enhanced by a hint of golden iridescence. Perhaps a few too many scuffs on Liberty's cheek and neck precluded it from being assigned the...
844The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$425.00
1895-S VF-20.
Always a challenging date to acquire at all grade levels. Some scattered contact marks are observed on its original surfaces with none being severe. A handsomely detailed example for its ascribed...
845The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$4,500.00
1895-S NGC MS-63.
Offered here today is a glorious example of this highly esteemed date. 1895 carries special meaning within the Morgan dollar series, and no example from that date is common, yet collectors will find...
853The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$4,800.00
1895-S NGC MS-63.
Attractive tones of russet, violet, and turquoise adorn the obverse between four and six o'clock, while the reverse is all white. The devices of both the obverse and reverse are frosty white, and the...
747The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$1,350.00
1895-S AU-53.
An accurately graded example from a total mintage of 400,000. Its enlivened surfaces depict a golden blush which copiously adorn a somewhat reflective aspect. The observed marks are consistent with...
748The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$1,250.00
1895-S NGC AU-53.
The mintmark observed on this piece appears as being double punched, with the first "S" high and leaning left. A mere 400,000 were minted. The surface marks discerned are not excessive for this...
749The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$2,600.00
1895-S AU-58 PL.
A date that is continually in demand. Its surfaces display some delicate hairlines, and a milky haze is seen in some areas of the fields. The glistening, semi-reflectivity is dazzling.
920The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$500.00
1895-S ANACS XF-40 DETAILS CLEANED.
As described on its label, this is a lightly cleaned specimen of a low mintage, popular San Francisco issue. The fields are somewhat mirrored, suggesting a former prooflike aspect. Lightly marked,...
921The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$900.00
1895-S AU-50 Cleaned.
A silver-gray radiance is perceptible on this desirable key date Morgan Silver Dollar. Although it has endured being cleaned, there are no obtrusive marks or blemishes to note on this decently struck...
922The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$1,650.00
1895-S AU-58 Cleaned.
An important key date Morgan Silver Dollar that is a circulated, but brilliant specimen. Some hazy golden toning is present on this probably lightly cleaned example. The contact marks and the strike...
923The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$3,400.00
1895-S NGC MS-61.
This brilliant issue is somewhat prooflike over gleaming surfaces. The surfaces have many fewer marks than often encountered with this issue, so an aggressive bid is likely required in order to win...
