Lot Title:

Four Proof Franklin Half Dollars. NGC.
Description:
1954 PF-67 Cameo, 1957 PF-68 Star, 1958 PF-68 Cameo, and 1961 PF-67 Ultra Cameo -- all NGC certified. All four of these coins are stone-cold brilliant, untoned Gems. Jet black fields contrast sharply with wonderfully frosted devices on the 1954 PF-67 CAM. Its reverse appears to be a full Ultra Cameo, while the obverse is limited by hints of brilliance at the edge of Ben’s portrait. Of the thousands of Proof Franklin Half Dollars bought and sold by Scotsman on an annual basis, the 1957 PF-68* may qualify as the single most schizophrenic coin we have ever handled for that date. The obverse displays a mind-boggling level of ultra-cameo contrast that is unparalleled in our experience, certainly one of the first of a handful of coins struck of that obverse die. If you imagine looking directly into the sun, and then closing your eyes, that gives you some idea of the obverse contrast. On the other hand, the reverse displays absolutely no cameo contrast whatsoever. The Liberty Bell is as reflective and as mirrored as the fields -- one of the last handful of coins struck of that die. The 1958 PF-68 Cameo displays just hints of low-point brilliance (from die-wear) on the portrait that bar an Ultra Cameo designation (the reverse flirts with full Ultra Cameo status), and the 1961 PF-67 Ultra Cameo displays blatant Ultra Cameo contrast throughout all devices, and exceedingly deep mirrors that further enhance the desirable cameo effect. AWESOME lot.
