Lot Title:
1865-S PCGS MS-64. Brother Jonathan.
Description:
As noted on its PCGS label, this specimen is pedigreed to the storied “Brother Jonathan” shipwreck. A paddle steamer built in 1851 and purchased by Carnelius Vanderbilt in 1852, “Brother Jonathan” was sold by Vanderbilt some time after 1856, and subsequently acquired by its last owner, The California Steam Navigation Company, in 1861. On July 30, 1865, on its last excursion, the overloaded vessel struck an uncharted rock at St. George Reef, off the coast of Crescent City, California. The collision resulted in the worst shipwreck off the Pacific Coast up to that time, with only 19 passengers surviving from a total of 244. The site of this wreck lay hidden until 1993, at which time, its rediscovery resulted in the marketing of coins brought back to the surface of the ocean, and placed into the hands of collectors. This splendid example displays a delicate orange-gold aspect with hints of rose iridescence. A few trivial marks can be found on its velvety surfaces. As an extremely handsome objet d'art from this historical event, it is expected to elicit much bidding enthusiasm, and the lot will be accompanied by its original plush presentation box.
