Lot Title: 1863 Fractional Currency Shield. F.
Description: This historical black background Fractional Currency Shield is housed in a frame that appears contemporary to the era of issuance. It exhibits a total of 39 particular specimens that show 20 faces and 19 backs. Starting in 1866 and continuing until 1867, approximately 4,500 shields were produced by the Department of the Treasurer of the United States, Francis Elias Spinner. They were distributed to banking facilities and also sold to private businesses. The 39 one-sided specimen notes that are depicted range in value from three to fifty cents. These Postage and Fractional Currency issues were affixed to a cardboard sheet having a shield outline. The majority of the shields were printed in black, while a few were made either in red or in green. They were sold unframed at the treasury department for an original price of $4.50. Prior to being shipped to the various banks across the country, they were stored in one of the basements of the Treasury Department. The basement subsequently flooded before their distribution. Like this one, the majority of these shields exhibit staining from the effects of the aforementioned water damage. Noted for accuracy of attribution are some perceived creases and a few missing fragments. The colors observed on these individual notes are, for the most part, still vivid. Because of the low number of these shields extant, perhaps less than 700, they are highly prized by both collectors and banking specialists.
