Lot Title:
1796 15 Stars, O-101, R-5. VF-20.
Description:
The consignor of this coin purchased it several years ago in a PCGS holder. It was certified as a VF-20. He subsequently submitted this piece to Numismatic Guaranty Corporation with the belief it would be ascribed at a higher grade level. Again it was attributed at a VF-20 condition level. He later decided to include it in his type set album of United States issues, so broke it out from its NGC encapsulation. He did however retain both grading labels, PCGS and NGC. These are to be included with this lot, and they will be forwarded with the piece to the winning bidder. Spanning a mere two years, this Draped Bust Small Eagle Reverse half dollar design was issued only to the extent of a scant 3,918 pieces. Although two years comprise the issue, 1796 and 1797, the 1796 was struck with either 15 stars or 16 stars on its obverse, while the 1797 shows only 15 stars. Of all United States coin types, this is the most elusive and enigmatic. None were delivered from the mint in 1796. The first delivery of 60 pieces was on February 28, 1797, with a subsequent one of 874 on March 21, 1797. These were both to the Bank of the United States in Philadelphia. It is conjectured that the 16 stars obverse of the 1796 issue was to pay tribute to the State of Tennessee's admission to the Union on June 1, 1796. This piece's surfaces are copiously toned in medium gray and exhibit the diagnostic die crack from the rim to Liberty's drapery extending to stars 15, 14, and 13 and back to its rim. There are no injurious marks or adjustment marks to note, but a couple minute rim bruises are noted on its reverse. The design elements are distinct for this ascribed level. A memorable date that will cause spirited bidding.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
