Lot Title:
1815 B-1, R-1. NGC MS-67.
Description:
Only one major grading service has assigned this lofty condition level, and only to one piece -- this one! There are none from this year certified finer by either major service. Designed by John Reich, this year marked the first for the Capped Bust design. After a lapse of seven years, due to the public's favoritism of Mexican and Spanish 2-real coinage, requests were made by various banks for this denomination. The majority of the coinage produced in 1815 was delivered to Bailly Blanchard, the cashier at Planters' Bank of New Orleans. The total documented mintage is 89,235, 20,003 of which were struck January 10, 1816. This piece is ascribed as Die State II. Diagnostic are faint obverse and reverse clash marks. These are most apparent beneath Liberty's profile and above the date as well as between the motto's scroll and the denomination. Phenomenally toned in blended vivid tones of sea green and crimson from glowing heirloom gray surfaces. Razor sharp details abound on all the design motifs. A lot that is historically significant and visually superlative!
