Lot Title:
1843 Breen 6861, Triple Date Variety. NGC AU-55.
Description:
The Liberty Head Type Eagle was designed by Christian Gobrecht. This particular Philadelphia year has a recorded mintage of a meager 75,462 specimens. Amongst this number, there is a very rare die variety as exemplified by this particular specimen. It depicts a low positioned date that is decisively repunched. There are two clear-cut impressions perceived below the numerals "1," "8," and "3." The numeral "4" is distinctly triple punched beneath its crossbar and its base. These features are observed when employing a powerful glass. A variety that is a challenge to locate in all grades, especially in XF-45 and higher. This specimen depicts a vibrant yellow-gold aspect with a delicate orange exuberance. The random sprinkling of contact ticks and hairlines are indicative of this grade level. Luster abounds amongst the inscriptions and devices. A trace of die rust appears above the tip of Eagle's right wing. Regardless of the die variety, this particular date is very scarce in AU condition, and is an esteemed date for the gold aficionado. Accompanying this lot is its NGC Photo Proof.
