(About The Images)
1885 F-12 Porous. 1885 F-12 Porous.
Lot Title: 1885 F-12 Porous.
Description: A totally original Shield Nickel that has full "Liberty" detail. This is one of those coins that are tough to find in any grade. It has a bit of porosity, but hey, you would too after 120 years.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Low Estimate: $340.00
High Estimate: $425.00
Lot Status: Bidding has been closed for this lot.
Hammered Price: $450.00

255The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$800.00
1885 PCGS PF-63.
Steve Deckling Collection. Many collectors of the circulation-strike Liberty nickel series will pursue a proof 1885 that fits into the set in question, because it represents a substantial savings...
381The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$550.00
1885 PCGS Genuine, code 92.
Hands-down a circulation strike, and not a worn proof, as one can ascertain by noticeable small die cracks. Although a little glossy in appearance, the surfaces are really only lightly cleaned, and...
382The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$330.00
1885 PCGS GD-4.
Captain Green Collection. Obviously original with slightly dark environmental effects that actually benefit overall sharpness. Full rims on both sides.
383The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$2,100.00
1885 NGC MS-62.
Washburn, Arkansas Collection. Some subtle die cracks connect a few stars and pronounce this a no-question circulation strike. That's important in a series where less-expensive proofs often...
384The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,050.00
1885 PCGS PF-64CAM CAC.
Berry Tree Collection. A classic substitute for the much tougher circulation strike, this particular proof 1885 has, if anything, too much cameo contrast to ever be mistaken for something other than...
379The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$1,400.00
1885 PCGS AU-50.
Wine And Dine Collection. Very attractive, particularly from the obverse, which displays amazingly consistent pewter-beige patina that shows not the slightest blemish anywhere. An utterly...
380The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$1,700.00
1885 PCGS PF-66CAM.
Bands of rapid-transit luster pinwheel around the center of both sides, flinging off a dazzling array of sparkling light that catches the eye and reflects gleaming brilliance back to the viewer. As...
546The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,250.00
1885 AU details/hairlines.
Definitely a true circulation strike, both sides nevertheless display sharp details for the AU-58 level and zero marks. Our conservative grade references the presence of some innocent hairlines that...
547The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,250.00
1885 PCGS AU-53.
Anyone who collects the series knows the impossibility of locating an 1885 key in any of the grades of VF through AU. For being a "key", the coin is almost always available in Fair to AG grades, but...
548The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,525.00
1885 PCGS AU-55.
B.B. Consignment. Perfectly graded, the entire coin displays only marginal evidence of wear, with light rub on the curls above Liberty's forehead and at the ear of corn. Granted, this key nickel...
341The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$380.00
1885 Good.
Outstanding quality for the grade derives from superb, original surfaces and bold major details. Liberty's portrait is fully outlined and displays a hint of lettering on the headband, and both sides...
342The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$500.00
1885 PCGS Good-4, and a 1912-S NGC VG-10.
Keys to the series comprise this duo of completely original and remarkably well matched Liberty nickels. 1885 (PCGS G-4) shows a nice, complete rim especially on the reverse, which is often very weak...
343The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$475.00
1885 PCGS GD-6.
The key to the series presents challenges simply due to the heavy wear found for the vast majority of examples. Although the present coin is substantially worn, both sides present a 100% complete...
344The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$900.00
1885 ANACS Net XF-40.
Glossy with fairly obvious signs of a thorough cleaning, pretty much all of the original luster is now lost to wear and abrasive treatment. Deficiencies aside, the coin still displays very attractive...
345The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,250.00
1885 PCGS AU-50.
No other coin in the Liberty nickel series, not even the 1912-S, can realistically challenge the 1885 as THE key in AU-50. Good luck finding one if you are assembling a near-UNC set, as they just...
346The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$2,100.00
1885 PCGS PF-66CAM.
A spectacular beige-white jewel as befits the PCGS PF-66 CAM grade. As would be hoped for, based on the designation, very little flowline luster revolves through the fields, and the resulting flat,...
341The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,150.00
1885 PCGS XF-45.
Without question, this has to be one of the most sought after "collector caliber" pieces in today's sale. The key 1885 nickel is abundant in really worn grades (AG to VG), and surprisingly available...
342The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,150.00
1885 PCGS PF-65.
Pedigreed to the Teich Family Collection. Contrary to popular misconception, the 1885 nickels in both commercial strike and proof format tend to show nice production quality. The obverse of this GEM...
918The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$850.00
1885 PCGS PF-63 (green label).
Contrary to common belief, 1885 Liberty nickels struck for circulation are usually quite sharp, but this proof striking is remarkably so, with pinpoint detail visible right down to the last kernel of...
511The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$475.00
Four low grade/damaged 1885, and two low grade/damaged 1886.
Key date Liberty nickels make up this sextet, but none is likely to win any beauty contests. The 1885s grade as follows: G+/corroded, G/surface damage/obverse cleaned, AG/corroded, and Fair/obverse...
512The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$575.00
1885 PCGS F-12.
The patina and lead-grey color are about as perfect as can be for a well circulated Liberty nickel, with absolutely none of the corrosion spots and stains that often plague coins of the series. While...
513The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$575.00
1885 PCGS F-12.
Absolutely rock-solid original surfaces set a splendid example for the ideal appearance of a circulated Liberty nickel, and this is a coin that could easily serve as the model for the PCGS grade of...
514The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$975.00
1885 ANACS AU detail/cleaned/net XF-40.
Harshly cleaned, with flat, dull, rough luster and an odd golden-tan sheen on both sides. Realistically, the details are closer to XF than AU, but still, this is THE key to the Liberty nickel series,...
515The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,750.00
1885 PCGS PF-66 Cameo.
Collectors of the Liberty nickel series, know that sometimes, it can be a challenge to differentiate between proof and commercial strikes. For that matter, the key-date status of 1885 means that...
298The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$390.00
1885 VG.
RTY is plain with "L...E" partially visible as well, and commensurate surfaces lead to a strong collector grade of VG-10. This key Liberty nickel suffers not serious problems other than good old...
299The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$390.00
1885 F detail/corroded and 1912-S Good.
Key Liberty nickels align together in this pair, neither one in high grade. 1885 has F-15 details, but moderate to heavy corrosion has pitted and spotted each side. 1912-S is a problem-free VG-8...
201The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$475.00
1885 and 1886.
1885 has VG-10 details, and 1886 has G-6 details, but both are lightly corroded. Two coin lot.
545The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$875.00
1885 ANACS XF-40.
Assertive russet-peach tone predominates across each side, with probably ninety-five percent of the reverse so toned. Fairly well struck, as is usually the case for the key Liberty nickel, with the...
546The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,100.00
1885 NGC PF-65.
NGC has designated this key Liberty nickel as a proof, but it features enough of a business strike appearance that it could easily fulfill a role as such. Strike quality is outstanding, yet the...
579The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$525.00
1885 NGC F-12.
Absence of the "I" in LIBERTY did not restrain NGC from grading this uncompromisingly original coin F-12, as the balance of the detail is commensurate with that grade. This is a "dotted date"...
580The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$800.00
1885 PCGS VF-30.
An 1885 Liberty nickel graded VF-30 by PCGS. Ignoring the actual level of detail present, it may be apparent to some bidders that the surfaces are rather hazy, and corrosion appears to lie beneath a...
351The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$675.00
1885 VF, lightly cleaned.
1885 is clearly the premier rarity in the Liberty nickel series, and especially between grades of F-12 and MS-60, price guides seem to underestimate the difficulty of obtaining a pleasing...
347The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$525.00
1885 VG-8 and 1912-S VG-8.
This key date pairing consists of the two most desirable dates for this series. Both have pleasing gray surfaces. The 1885 has slight legend weakness on the reverse from 12:00 clockwise to 1:00, and...
405The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$350.00
1885 About Good-3 and 1886 Good-4-.
A chance to obtain the two scarcest regular issues for this series. Their condition makes it obvious that they were subjected to usage far beyond their normal life. Still desirable as key dates, and...
406The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$1,100.00
1885 XF-45, Cleaned.
Due to an interruption in minor coinage from February 1885 through 1886, this date is one those business strikes that was affected by a limited mintage. Some mottling appears because of an improper...
335The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$250.00
1885 ANACS GD-4 Details. Cracked Planchet, Cleaned.
Well, here is a great opportunity to procure this super tough nickel at a lower price. It has solid Good detail, but unfortunately someone tried to fool with it. It was cleaned a long time ago, but...
337The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$2,200.00
1885 PCGS PF-66CAM.
This magnificent specimen exhibits frosted devices that are contrasted by deep mirrored fields. Furthermore, the visual vibrancy is enhanced by a delightful nuance of golden rose. Nary a blemish or...
932The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$600.00
1885 VG-10.
The key date to this series. There are no major impairments, just some very delicate hairlines crossing Liberty's profile. It has an heirloom silver aspect.
933The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$1,350.00
1885 PCGS XF-45.
This 100% original Liberty Nickel has no major distractions and is fully struck. It is one of the keys to the entire series, and it is very rare to see one in this grade unmolested. The devices have...
1128The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$425.00
1885 Good.
The key date of the series, and a pleasant one indeed. The smooth, damage-free surfaces are original, and the rims are full and distinct.
1129The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$400.00
1885 XF-40 Damaged.
This is the key date to the Liberty Head Nickel series with less than 1.5 million struck, and very few saved. Although it has four deep scrapes and some rim damage, it has excellent detailing and...
