Lot Title:
1878-S XF-40+.
Description:
This notable rarity is somewhat of an enigma. Its recorded mintage is 140,000, but the number extant today is significantly lower. The supposition is that a large number of this date was melted at the San Francisco Mint prior to being released. These earlier dates had been hoarded because the value of paper money depreciated shortly after the outbreak of the Civil War. This specimen has exquisitely toned silver surfaces with a mauve aspect. There are some insignificant hairlines, ticks, and a couple paltry obverse rim contusions. An impressively struck representative of this famous rarity.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
