Lot Title:
(1795) Washington - Liberty and Security Penny, Asylum Edge PCGS MS-64BN.
Description:
Neils Franks Consignment. Related to the later-produced (and much rarer) halfpenny tokens, the larger, undated "penny" was designed by Thomas Wyon and struck by Peter Kempson in Birmingham in 1795. PCGS alludes to that year on the slab insert, although the tokens have no actual date noted. Pieces are known with a plain edge or a decorated edge, this being an example of the latter. Maroon-brown patina dominates the surface, accented with traces of mint red adhering to some devices and lettering. (PCGS# 000767)
