Lot Title:

1865 PCGS UNC details/cleaning
Description:
Mintage: 1295, ZERO graded MS-60 or higher at PCGS. As far as is known today, only a handful of 1865 half-eagles qualify for a mint-state grade, and indeed, while PCGS has never permitted a straight-grade MS-6X for any, NGC has placed exactly five in mint-state holders (highest is MS-61). The present "UNC details" represents the closest mint-state grading event ever at PCGS. While "cleaning" has also been mentioned on the PCGS label, whatever process occurred seems not to have been severely invasive, as neither side exhibits any actual hairlines, showing instead the presence of glossy texture on elevated design features. It is possible that a faint greyish film washes over some portions of the surface, requiring future conservation. Minute contact marks pepper each side, appearing most prominent within wide expanses of the field areas. (PCGS# 008298)
