Lot Title:
1968-S Proof Lincoln cent on a dime planchet NGC PF-65.
Description:
Any error that involves a denomination struck on the planchet intended for another denomination will elicit interest among error collectors, but this is a special case. We have here a PROOF Lincoln cent that has been struck on a (presumably proof) dime planchet, and it somehow escaped individual inspection, got placed into a proof set holder, and comes to us today certified by NGC (PF-66). Remarkably, the coin must have remained in its proof set enclosure for decades, as it had time to acquire the kind of chartreuse-grey patina that takes a long time to develop naturally. Rather astonishing with "A+" collector appeal in our opinion.
