Actually, this is an example of an 1839/8 with reverse of 1836 specimen, Breen 6148. This suggested "9 over 8" variety was the result of flawed punches. Liberty's profile was redesigned this year, and most of the surviving pieces from the 27,021 mintage are in low grades. The present orange-gold example is a pleasing representative of this year with no unsightly detractions.
