Lot Title:
1857-D NGC AU-58.
Description:
Mintage: 2364, 22 in AU-58, 13 higher at NGC. Very difficult to locate in UNC, a fully detailed and almost completely lustrous example like this may prove to be an excellent stand-in for a high grade set of branch-mint gold. Pleasing definition within the strands of hair for Liberty's portrait defies the Dahlonega reputation for poorly struck coins, and every single one of the feathers in the eagle's wings displays intricate details, albeit flattened slightly on the highest relief areas by the inevitable lack of die pressure. Attractive brassy gold patina suggests a very good level of preservation, with just very light friction everywhere. (PCGS# 007783)
