Lot Title:
1766 Pitt halfpenny, NGC MS-63 BN.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. The NGC slab states "mint error" though one could readily argue that contention, as any coin struck as well as this, even on a cracked planchet, would have been considered suitable for production 350 years ago. Mint production was not cheap in the 18th century! The crack emits toward the upper left from William Pitt's nose and apparently extends all the way through the rim (obscured by the slab insert). Technically, this is a rather amazing example, exhibiting lovely Hershey-brown patina overall with mahogany accents. A Pitt token rarely shows up looking this nice. The British in 1765 intended to help fund the French and Indian War by imposing tariffs on the American colonies, which elicited protests against parliament by the indignant colonists. William Pitt headed efforts to demand repeal of the act, and his success in doing so led to his rise to fame as the "defender of the colonies". The Pitt tokens were clearly minted to mark Pitt's achievement and celebrate his fame among the colonists. (PCGS# 000236)
