(About The Images)
1884 NGC MS-61. 1884 NGC MS-61.
Lot Title: 1884 NGC MS-61.
Description: Wine And Dine Collection. 2 graded MS-61, 11 higher at NGC, Mintage: 1700. 1884 is a well-known rarity in the 3-cent nickel series, with proof examples not difficult to locate, while circulation-strike coins are near-impossible to find in any selling venue. Correct attribution as the latter should never come into question for this example, with the rims showing typical circulation strike roundness, while overall definition plainly shows that no special care was taken to bring up details. The NGC grade seems flat-out conservative, as this has all the luster and eye-appeal of a typical MS-62 or better coin, although we admit to some very faint, feathery hairlines traveling randomly through the fields. (PCGS# 003752)

239The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$1,500.00
1884 ANACS AU-50.
Campania Estate. Mintage: 1700. The absurdly low mintage for 1884 guarantees that it will always be a key to the circulating series, and this is a delightful example, certified as grading AU-50 by...
980The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$925.00
1884 (B05, stage C, plate coin) ANACS XF-45.
The attached label on the upper edge of the ANACS holder indicates "stage C." The pale grey surfaces reveal a rose blush and a sprinkling of minute dark spots. The vertical lines in the Roman...

1884 (B05, stage A, plate coin) PCI AU-50.
The cataloger's grade is XF-45. A rare no-question circulation strike, one need not even attribute the dies to correctly ascertain the true nature of this coin. The planchet obviously saw no special...
982The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,550.00
1884 (P04a) ANACS MS-61.
Allan's personal attribution of "P04a" suggests that ANACS has incorrectly attributed this as a circulation strike, when it is instead a proof. In that case, a suitable net grade would be PF-60,...

1884 (B05, plate coin) PCI MS-63.
1884 B05, Plate coin. Allan's notes additionally state "Stage D". Lead-grey surfaces are attractive for the PCI MS-63 grade, although the cheek displays a trio of minor hairlines that limit upgrade...

1884 NGC PF-65.

1884 (P04b, plate coin) PCGS PF-65 (green label).
1884 P04b, Plate coin. The PCGS PF-65 grade ignores the effects of some iron-grey corrosion. That said, the plate in the book does not appear to display the same surface issues, so it seems very...

1884 PCGS PF-65.
Violet-gold streaks accent the dominant pumpkin-yellow surface that characterizes this lovely proof. The strike is outstanding, having been delivered from dies fresh enough to produce some cameo...

1884 PCGS PF-66.
A rose iridescence complements this crisply struck specimen's delicately frosted motifs and satiny fields. Its dominating visual vibrancy minimizes the effect of some minute speckles surrounding...

1884 PCGS PF-66.
This low mintage date has more than double the mintage for the Proof specimens than its corresponding business strikes. Its frosty motifs are supported by satinlike fields imbued with delicate golden...
