1852 $50 U.S. Assay, 887. PCGS AU-53.
Description:
Eunice Peters Estate. "887" noted on the PCGS insert references the fineness statement on the motto above the eagle ("887 THOUS.") which, in the final iteration for the $50 Assay gold slug, was replaced by the statement of 900 fineness of gold commonplace to production elsewhere. The design implemented for these large, heavy coins focused less on aesthetics and more on function, as the reverse shows a simple, machined geometric design, while the obverse features a simplified eagle embellished by patriotic symbols. Production also seems to have favored utility over precision, as this example shows central weakness due in part to a soft strike, in addition to light wear alluded by the AU-53 grade. The legends relegated toward the edge (UNTED STATES ASSAY OFFICE OF GOLD SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA / 1852) appear a little faint due to the same imprecise strike. The PCGS slab insert distorts viewing of the eight corners of the coin, but we are able to see the edges and determine that they are remarkably free from the bumps and dings that plague the series. Many received some light damage through handling simply because of their heft. Brassy-gold patina shows some greyish accents that provide a pleasing sense of original quality on the obverse, with the reverse more plainly medium-gold. (PCGS# 010016)
