Lot Title:
1857-O NGC XF-45.
Description:
Mintage: 30,000. New Orleans produced some extreme rarities in the double-eagle series throughout its first decade or so of production, and though 1857-O does not rank among the very rarest, it proves to be a difficult issue at any grade. Scarcely any mint-state examples exist, and even AU examples comprise a very low population. This coin at the XF-45 level provides a manageable level of value that will not break the bank, and aesthetic qualities include pale, brassy-grey patina with underlying butterscotch accents. Very little luster remains on either side as expected of the grade level, but central devices retain major definition, all the more emboldened by those toning accents. (PCGS# 008921)
